Tommy Sampson Blog

In this week's blog, written before Fabio Capello's resignation as England manager, Tommy compares the careers of two England captains, World Cup winner Bobby Moore and the recently deposed John Terry.

When Bobby Moore was arrested before the 1970 world cup for allegedly stealing a bracelet not one single person in this country wanted to believe in his guilt. Why? Because his demeanour and behaviour off the pitch for his club and country had been of such a high standard that it was inconcievable that "our Bobby" could have done such a thing!.

Sadly John Terry has not and probably never will be afforded the same depth of affection - I wonder why?! The England captain's armband has in recent years has been spat on, trod into the mud an generally treated with about as much respect as a piece of yesterday's wedding confetti and even Wayne Rooney has worn it. Wherever they are Bobby Moore and Billy Wright must be shaking their heads in total disbelief and lets not forget Bryan Robson and Terry Butcher. As for the big question of who should be the next England captain, for me it's a no-brainer - Scott Parker.
